Why Is it Important to Have Normal Estrogen Levels?

Progesterone and estrogen fluctuationsEstrogen and its partner progesterone take turns driving the menstrual cycle along. Estrogen rises and peaks in the first half of the cycle during ovulation, and then falls because progesterone rises. When these two hormones do their job, everything in the body works well and the brain gives good feedback to the hormones.

With any disruption of the hormone levels, both of the hormones can become out of balance.

Why Do Estrogen Levels Fall?

There are many reasons why estrogen levels may fall. Here is a list of the some of the causes of low estrogen levels:

  • Menopause
  • Stress and fatigue
  • Miscarriage
  • Extreme exercise or training
  • Eating disorders
  • Polycystic ovary syndrome (PMS)
  • Hypopituitarism
  • Hypogonadism

What Happens during Menopause?

As the amount of eggs in a woman’s body runs out, the body will stop producing the quantity of estrogen it did before. When a woman has not had her period for 12 consecutive months, she has gone through menopause.

In a perfect world, progesterone would match the estrogen left in the body, but normally the levels don’t match and through the turbulent time of menopause, women are left to deal with their changing bodies.
