Normal Progesterone Levels
Due to progesterone’s wide-ranging influence throughout the body, and especially the reproductive system, maintaining stable hormonal levels is imperative. Progesterone imbalance can lead to gallbladder disease, infertility, mood swings, and other serious conditions.
Reasons for fluctuating progesterone levels vary. Pregnancy, menopause, menstruation, and even time of day can effect a change in progesterone level.
'Normal progesterone levels' refers to average levels of progesterone for women according to age and menopausal stage.
Progesterone levels are higher during ovulation and pregnancy and lower during other periods.
Ranges of Normal Progesterone Levels
Normal progesterone levels range depending on different factors. For example:
Premenopause and Perimenopause
In these stages, normal progesterone hormone levels range between 8 - 10 ng/ml when women are not ovulating. Generally, no side effects are experienced at the normal range.
Postmenopause
Because the postmenopausal female is no longer reproductively active, normal progesterone levels are typically stable at 1 ng/ml.
Ovulation
Progesterone levels rapidly increase during ovulation in preparation for pregnancy, the normal level hovering between 18-20 ng/ml.
Pregnancy
During pregnancy, when the majority of the body’s progesterone is produced in the placenta, the normal progesterone level is approximately 16 ng/ml. High levels of progesterone are normal during pregnancy.
Normal progesterone levels depending on menstrual period and menopausal stage have been detailed above. No normal level of progesterone exists for menopause because of the rapid and erratic hormonal fluctuations that characterize this stage.
